According to reports, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed the death of 54 Ugandan peacekeepers in the Al-Shabaab terror attack on Saturday (June 3). In his statement, Museveni said that after this attack, the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) showed tremendous bravery and recaptured their base camp by Tuesday (May 30). During this attack, the President of Uganda also ordered court martial of two Major-rank officers for giving wrong instructions to the soldiers. Â
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni reported the attack on Uganda's base camp last week, but did not disclose the death toll. However, at that time he had warned the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab of serious consequences. According to the report, the attack took place in Bulamarer, about 130 km southwest of Somalia's capital Mogadishu. Â
At the same time, the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab is claiming responsibility for this attack, claiming that it has killed 137 soldiers. All the deceased Ugandan soldiers were members of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Meanwhile, on Thursday (June 1, 2023), three Al-Shabaab terrorists have been killed in a retaliatory air strike carried out by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM). The attack took place in Wayanta, about 60 km southwest of Somalia's southern port city of Kismayo.
Al-Shabaab continues to carry out attacks and kill innocent people in Somalia to establish a Muslim rule governed by Sharia law. He considers Somalia's current government to be backed by the West. In 2022, Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mahmoud also declared war on terrorists in response. Although Somalia is a Muslim country and 99 percent of the population is Muslim, but to make it more radical and Islamic, terrorists are killing innocents. This is similar to what happened in Afghanistan, which was already an Islamic nation, but there were not as many restrictions on people, women, as the Taliban have imposed on them after taking power.  Now in Afghanistan, girls are banned from education, employment, even going to parks, etc., which is what Al-Shabaab wants  in Somalia.  Â
