Lima: On Sunday, a bus and a motorcycle taxi collided in Peru, killing at least 13, according to the public prosecutor. Public prosecutor Edwin Ramos told the RPP radio station that the fatalities occurred when a fire started after the head-on collision in the area of Ancash, about 370 kilometers (230 miles) north of Lima.
Coroners will use fingerprints to identify the deceased because the bodies were burned beyond recognition, according to police in the Casma province. One of the victims was a motorcycle taxi driver, and the bus driver was taken into custody by the police.
Additionally, six injured individuals were transported to the Casma regional hospital. The bus, which was departing from the northern region of Piura and heading toward Lima, was carrying about 50 passengers.
Speeding, the state of the roads, the lack of road signs, and the lack of government regulation all contribute to the prevalence of traffic accidents in Peru.
