Lucknow: Preparations are being made to change the slab of electricity rates in Uttar Pradesh. At present, there are a total of 80 slabs of all categories. It is being considered to be 40-50. This can indirectly increase the burden on consumers' pockets. However, the government is going to give cheap electricity to educational institutions and during religious events like Ramlila, Durgapuja, Kawand Yatra, Devi Jagran.
After the government's order, the Power Corporation is engaged in this exercise. Soon the structure of the new slab will be prepared and sent to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission for consent. If the commission accepts the corporation's proposal, it may be announced in the 2020-21 tariff order. However, the commission has started the process of determining annual revenue requirement and electricity rates.
Sources say that the Indian government has suggested slab reduction in the state. On this, the process is being done to simplify the existing structure of rates by reducing the slab. In the household category, there are four slabs of rates at this time barring the consumers below the poverty line. It is proposed to make one slab of 200 units and the other of more than 200 units. The idea is to keep the rate same for users with more than 200 units. Similarly, slabs of commercial, agricultural, industrial and other categories will also be reduced. This time the electricity rates will be changed significantly.
