Niger: The government in the West African country of Nigeria has lifted the ban from Twitter after a long gap of seven months. The ban had cut more than 200 million people from social media networks. According to Kashifu Inuva Abdullahi, director general of the country's National Information Technology Development Agency, Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that the operation of Twitter in the country be resumed on Thursday.
Abdullahi said the decision came after Twitter agreed to meet certain conditions, including the opening of an office in Nigeria. Nigeria suspended the operation of the social networking site on June 4 last year, citing "the continued use of Twitter as a platform for activities that reduce Nigeria's corporate existence".
The action was followed by fierce criticism from the Nigerian government, as the move came immediately after social media networks deleted a post by Buhari. Twitter's closure in one of Africa's most populous countries was shocking to the whole world.
