Mahendra Singh Dhoni, famously known as 'Captain Cool,' is renowned for his calm and composed demeanor on the field. Despite his reputation for making serene and strategic decisions, there have been moments when Dhoni has displayed a different side of his personality, both on and off the cricket field. One such incident was recently revealed by his former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Indian team teammate, Subramaniam Badrinath.
In a recent interview, Badrinath recounted a memorable episode involving Dhoni that took place during an IPL match. According to Badrinath, the incident occurred in a low-scoring game where CSK faced Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). In that match, CSK fell short of the target set by RCB, resulting in a rare display of frustration from Dhoni.
Badrinath elaborated on the situation, saying that CSK was chasing a modest target of 126 runs set by RCB. However, the team lost wickets at a rapid pace and ultimately failed to achieve the target, resulting in a defeat. In that game, Badrinath was dismissed for just one run after being trapped LBW by Anil Kumble, and Dhoni himself managed only four runs.
After the match, Dhoni, visibly upset by the loss, entered the dressing room and encountered a small water bottle. In a moment of frustration, Dhoni kicked the bottle, sending it flying out of the room. Badrinath, who was present at that moment, was taken aback by the display of anger. He described the scene, noting that the entire team, including himself, avoided making eye contact with Dhoni, trying not to draw attention to themselves in the tense atmosphere.
The match in question was from the 2008 IPL season, where RCB batted first and scored 126 runs for the loss of eight wickets. In response, CSK managed only 112 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 20 overs, leading to their defeat.
Despite this rare display of frustration, Dhoni has continued to be a central figure in IPL cricket. In the IPL 2024 season, Dhoni showcased his enduring skills, scoring 161 runs at an impressive strike rate of 220.54 and an average of 53.67 across 11 innings out of 14 matches.
Subramaniam Badrinath, who played for CSK from 2008 to 2013, was an integral part of the team during those years. In his IPL career, he featured in 95 matches and accumulated 1,441 runs, contributing significantly to the team's success.
This revelation about Dhoni's rare outburst offers a glimpse into the emotional side of a player known for his otherwise unflappable composure, highlighting the intense passion and competitiveness that drives him.
