International Mountain Day is celebrated every year on 11 December to raise awareness about the importance of mountains, focus on opportunities and emphasize the development of mountains. This day educates citizens to understand the role of mountains in the environment and its impact on life. International Mountain Day is celebrated every year with a special theme.

International Mountains Day was formed in 1992 when the "Managing Fragile Ecosystems: Sustainable Mountain Development" of Chapter 13 of Agenda 21 was adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. There is no message in this, it gave a new look to the history of the development of the mountains. Seeing the growing attention to the importance of the mountain, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2002 the United Nations International Mountains Year and December 11, 2003, was designated as International Mountains Day. So, we can say that the International Mountains Day was celebrated for the first time on 11 December 2003.

Mountains are one of the most beautiful structures of nature, majestic, solid which stand against the sky and feel as if they can capture the whole country with their shadow. They are sources of entertainment, resources and agriculture. The slopes of the mountains provide sufficient space for production.

Mountains play an important role in water cycle,

- The frozen snow in the mountains melts in the spring and summer seasons and provides essential water for settlements, agriculture and industries.

In truth, in semi-arid and arid regions, about 90% of the river comes from the mountains.

- In Temperate Europe, the Alps, which occupy about 11% of the area of the Rhine River Basin, mean 31% of the mountain's annual flow and supply more than 50% in summer.

- Water coming from the mountains is also a source of hydroelectric power.

- In developing countries wood fuel is the main source of energy in mountain settlements.

- Mountain wood is also used in many ways.

- Mountain ecosystems play an important role in biological diversity etc.
