WhatsApp creates a backup of chats on its users' devices, letting you know. In addition, Android device users have the option to back up their messages on iCloud, Google Drive and iOS device users. You can create a backup on Google Drive or iCloud by going to Chat and backup here from the app's settings. This is where you also get the option of AutoBackup. You can choose when the app will back up your chats on Google Drive or iCloud. This will allow old messages to be recovered. You can recover messages like this,

Google Drive/Google Drive with iCloud Backup: If the chat has been deleted, uninstall WhatsApp. Reinstall from the App Store. Set up WhatsApp from your old number.Last you'll have the option to restore a backup. Tap here and wait for the message to be restored. Your deleted messages and chats will be returned.

This method of getting back messages with local backups only works on Android phones. WhatsApp also creates a local backup on the device at 2 p.m. (when it's on the net), which will help you. Follow these steps, go to the Android phone's file manager. Open the Database folder in the Whatsapp folder here.

It will show several files and you select msgstore.db.crypt12.rename it to msgstore-newest.db.crypt12.Now rename another database file here to msgstore.db.crypt12. This requires a backup in the Drive app's menu. Now reinstall WhatsApp after uninstalling.Set up WhatsApp and in last you'll have the option to restore local backups.
