WASHINGTON: Top US Representative from Indiana, Jackie Walorski and her two aides were killed in a car crash when the vehicle they were in was struck by another, said the Elkhart County, Indiana, Sheriff's Office.
According to the statement, the cause of the incident on Wednesday is still under investigation. However, the car carrying Walorski and two other people collided with the northbound car after it crossed the centre line, as per the news report. As stated by the sheriff, the car driver also killed.
Walorski, 58, joins lawmakers Don Young of Alaska and Jim Hagedorn of Minnesota as the third member of the House Republican conference to pass away this year.
To honour Walorski's passing, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she had directed flags to fly at half staff at the Capitol. Walorski was referred to as a "warrior for the people of Indiana" by Republican Whip Steve Scalise.
Scalise noted that Walorski had been a part of his whip team and added, "She will be remembered for her generosity, determination, and devotion to helping others. Walorski's passing was announced on Twitter by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in a message that was posted "with a heavy heart."
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, an Indiana native, said on Twitter he was "shocked and saddened" to learn of Walorski's death.
