Know The Countries That Have Banned TikTok Over National Security Concerns: Citing national security concerns, the Canadian government has ordered the closure of TikTok’s offices in Toronto and Vancouver, although the app remains accessible to users. Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced the decision, which followed a national security review and recommendations from Canada’s intelligence agencies.

“We concluded that the activities conducted by TikTok in Canada could harm national security,” Champagne said. Although specifics weren’t shared, he emphasized the seriousness of the issue. Canada clarified that Canadians are still free to access and create content on the app.

Countries That Have Partially or Completely Banned TikTok

  • Afghanistan: In April 2022, the Taliban banned TikTok, stating its content conflicted with Islamic principles.
  • Australia: In April, Australia blocked TikTok on government-owned devices due to security concerns highlighted by the Department of Home Affairs. Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said the ban would be implemented promptly.
  • Belgium: Belgium restricted TikTok use on government phones, with Prime Minister Alexander De Croo voicing concerns over potential connections to Chinese intelligence.
  • Canada: In February 2023, Canada banned TikTok on government devices, following privacy and security concerns. Treasury Board President Mona Fortier noted the decision aligned with international allies.
  • Denmark: In March, Denmark’s Defense Ministry directed employees to remove TikTok from work devices, citing national security risks.
  • India: India implemented a full ban on TikTok in 2020, alongside several other Chinese apps, after border tensions with China raised sovereignty and security concerns.
  • Nepal: In November 2023, Nepal imposed a ban on TikTok, stating it was harming “social harmony” by spreading inappropriate content.
  • The Netherlands: While not outright banned, Dutch officials were advised to avoid TikTok, although enforcement has been minimal.
  • New Zealand: New Zealand restricted TikTok on parliamentary devices in line with other European nations, after consultations at national and international levels.
  • Norway: Norway banned TikTok on government devices in March, though civil servants may use the app on personal devices for professional purposes. Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl highlighted intelligence concerns with Russia and China.

  • Taiwan: Taiwan prohibited TikTok on government devices in December 2022.
  • United Kingdom: UK officials are restricted from using TikTok on work devices, with the Cabinet Office explaining the ban was consistent with similar measures in other countries.
  • United States: The U.S. has taken significant measures against TikTok. Federal agencies have removed the app from devices, and TikTok is banned from White House devices. Additionally, Montana attempted a statewide ban, though it was later overturned on free speech grounds. Recently, TikTok’s CEO discussed a project aimed at securing U.S. user data in a Congressional hearing, as debates continue around the app’s national security implications.

A growing number of countries have restricted or banned TikTok due to national security concerns. Canada recently closed TikTok’s offices, joining other nations like the U.S., India, and Australia in limiting the app’s presence on government devices or in some cases, implementing full bans. Citing risks such as potential data access by foreign entities and content concerns, governments worldwide are taking a cautious approach. While some countries, like the Netherlands, have issued advisory warnings, others, including Afghanistan and Somalia, have outright prohibited the app due to social and security threats.
