KOLKATA, September 8: Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Nirmal Chandra Roy emerged victorious in the by-elections for the Dhupguri assembly constituency, situated in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, defeating BJP's Tapasi Roy by a substantial margin of over 4,500 votes.
The CPI (M) candidate, supported by Congress, found themselves in a distant third place.
In the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections, Bishnu Pada Roy of the BJP had triumphed over Trinamool Congress's incumbent MLA Mitali Roy with a 4,355-vote lead. However, in the by-polls, the Trinamool Congress managed to surpass that victory margin.
The competition remained tight throughout the process. Initially, in the first three rounds of counting, the BJP candidate led, albeit by a slim margin. But by the end of the fourth round, the Trinamool Congress candidate took the lead. The fifth round saw the BJP candidate regaining a slight advantage. Ultimately, after the completion of the tenth round of counting, the Trinamool Congress candidate was declared the winner.
Trinamool Congress's National General Secretary and party MP, Abhishek Banerjee, extended his congratulations to the people of Dhupguri. He stated that the constituency's residents had chosen a path of development over animosity and intolerance.
Banerjee also commended the dedication of the party workers, pledging that the Trinamool Congress would spare no effort to ensure the all-round development of Dhupguri.
