The increased reading habit among people was evident from the Thanjavur Tamil University’s annual book fair sale that reached a record Rs 17.50 lakh against the usual Rs 2-2.5 lakh. The university book fair is organised every year from September 15 to September 30. The special offer is books published by the university will be given a 50% discount offer.

The Vice Chancellor G Balasubramanian inaugurated the fair on the usual date and upon request from the people the university extended the fair till October 31 and the response was very good evident from sale worth Rs 17.50 lakh. “Usually, the book fair sales are anything between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 2.75 lakh every year but this year was remarkable,” said the Vice Chancellor.

The added feature of this year book fair includes sharing the catalogue and price list of the books published by the university through the social media and introduction of online money transaction owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. This enhanced orders from various parts of Tamil Nadu and pan India. Balasubramanian said that the previous year’s book fair sale was Rs 2.75 lakh and the sale during Tamil New year was Rs 2.23 lakh. The university has printed 3,500 copies of ‘Semmozhi Endra Elakkanam matrum Elakkiyam’ (Tamil Classical Grammar and Literature) and all the 3500 copies were sold out. “The University has been planning a reprinting and has sought the permission for commencing the works,” VC added.
