Tamil Nadu govt to utilize NGOs, Volunteers for the Adult Education Programme

The literacy programmes including special adult literacy programme, the ‘Karkum Bharatham’ scheme and the adult literacy centres establishment that were halted due to COVID-19 induced lockdown, will be implemented soon said a senior official from non-formal and adult education wing. The duration of the programme is six months and basic literacy and numeracy have been taught to the learners. This is a new programme and one year old.

“As per the plan, the upcoming programme will benefit more than 1.5 lakh illiterate adults in the age group of 15 and above, especially from southern districts”, said the official. The scheme aims at set up more than 900 adult literacy centres even at the block level. The official said the authorities concerned in the government and government-aided schools will identify volunteers and NGOs, to participate in the literacy drive this year. The report says the government has allocated Rs 5.18 crore for the adult literacy programme for this academic year, and the official said the scheme will also be implemented at the field level in coordination with the chief educational officers, district educational officers, block education officers, assistant program officers, block resources teachers and school headmasters of the district concerned.

INR 15 Lakh has been allocate by the government to implement a special adult literacy programme for the prisoners. He added the scheme will be implemented in the central prisons of Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Vellore, Salem, Tiruchy, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Coimbatore and the district prison of Pudukottai in coordination with the department of prison. “Over 1,000 prisoners will be benefited from this scheme”, he said adding that a completion certificate will be issued to the successful learners.
