Naima Khatoon has made history as the first woman to be appointed Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in over 100 years. Her appointment was approved by the Ministry of Education and President Droupadi Murmu, the university's Visitor. The Election Commission of India granted permission for her appointment despite the Model Code of Conduct being in effect. Khatoon, who earned her PhD in psychology from AMU, began her academic career in the university's psychology department in 1988 and became a professor in 2006.

She later became the principal of the university's Women's College in 2014. Khatoon's appointment comes after a long history of male leadership at the university. Founded in 1875 as the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, AMU became a university in 1920, making it one of India's oldest institutions.

The university has seen only one other woman in a top leadership role, Begum Sultan Jahan, who was chancellor in 1920. Khatoon's husband, Professor Mohammad Gulrez, served as AMU's Acting Vice Chancellor last year. Khatoon's candidacy had previously sparked controversy, with accusations of conflict of interest given her husband's role.
