However, the event took a devastating turn as a crush unfolded, claiming the lives of at least 12 individuals, as reported by local media outlets.
Prime Minister Christian Ntsay somberly confirmed the heartbreaking loss of life, revealing that an additional 80 individuals were injured, with 11 of them in critical condition. The tragedy occurred within the confines of the Mahamasina Stadium, a prominent venue located in the nation's capital, Antananarivo.
In response to the grim turn of events, President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar earnestly requested a moment of silence during the ceremony to honor those who had tragically lost their lives.

Regrettably, the Mahamasina Stadium has witnessed similar unfortunate incidents in the past. With a seating capacity of around 41,000 people, the venue has experienced fatal crowd-related incidents before. In a previous occurrence, a crush transpired prior to a football match that pitted Madagascar against Senegal.
This match held significance as it served as a qualifier for the 2018 African Cup of Nations. During this incident, one person lost their life, and a distressing 37 others were left injured.
Additionally, the stadium's history was marred by a stampede that occurred at a concert in 2019, leading to the tragic demise of at least 15 individuals.
