Tehran: A tragic incident unfolded in Iran as official media reported a horrifying mass shooting carried out by a 30-year-old man, resulting in the deaths of 12 relatives, including his father and brother. The assailant, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly used a Kalashnikov assault rifle in the heinous act, which took place in a remote rural village located in the south-central province of Kerman. The disturbing incident is considered rare in Iran, where such occurrences are infrequent.

Following the gruesome attack, security forces swiftly intervened, ultimately resorting to lethal force to neutralize the perpetrator. The assailant was shot and killed by security forces, putting an end to the deadly rampage. The motive behind the shooting, stated to be a family dispute, was not elaborated upon by officials, leaving the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy shrouded in mystery.

Mass shootings remain uncommon in Iran, a nation where strict regulations limit civilian access to firearms. Individuals are typically only permitted to possess hunting rifles, making incidents of this nature particularly startling. This tragic event bears resemblance to a similar occurrence two years ago, when a disgruntled former employee of a state institution in western Iran carried out a shooting spree, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to five others before taking his own life. Such instances serve as poignant reminders of the devastating impact of gun violence within communities.
