Tragic Riverboat Capsizing Claims Lives of Around 50 in Bangui

Bangui: On Friday, tragedy struck in the Central African Republic's capital, Bangui, as around 50 people lost their lives when a riverboat capsized. The incident occurred on the Mpoko River, as the boat was transporting passengers to a village funeral.

According to Thomas Djimasse, the head of the civil protection department, the authorities were alerted about the incident 40 minutes after it happened. Rescue teams were immediately dispatched, and they managed to recover approximately 50 bodies from the river.

Djimasse also mentioned that the search operation was still underway, indicating the possibility of more casualties. The exact number of people missing or drowned is yet to be confirmed.

Government spokesperson Maxime Balalou provided a preliminary death toll of over 30 individuals. He emphasized the need for stricter adherence to river transport safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future.

The capsizing of the riverboat has brought grief and shock to Bangui, highlighting the risks associated with water transport in the region.
