Travelling on buses of Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) of Punjab has become very expensive. The Punjab government has increased the fare per kilometre by six paise, putting an extra financial burden on the pocket of public. These increased rates will be applicable from 12 pm on Tuesday night. PRTC managing director Jaskaran Singh confirmed this.

MD Jaskaran Singh said that earlier the fare per kilometre of ordinary buses was 116 paise, now it has been increased to 122 paise per kilometre. These increased rates will be implemented after midnight. Significantly, earlier in January 2019, the fare of buses was increased. The PRTC is struggling with bad economic conditions. However, after the lockdown opens, the corporation has started sending about 35 per cent of its fleet buses on routes. Due to the very low ridership, the PRTC is only earning about 15 to 18 lakhs daily.

Before the lockdown, till March 20, the corporation was earning revenue of 1.25 crore daily. Due to the large decline in income and now continuously increasing rates of diesel for the last several days, it was also difficult for the corporation to meet its expenses. The corporation had demanded the government to increase the fares of buses. Punjab government has increased the fares of buses by six paise per kilometre on Tuesday.
