Kolkata: A Panchayat member of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal has been arrested for trying to rape a differently-abled woman. This case has come to the fore after the incident of raping a minor in Hanskhali of the state and a woman in Kakdwip. Following the order of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI is investigating the Hanskhali rape case. An attempt was made to rape the handicapped victim in Kalukhara village under Pingla police station area of ​​Midnapore district. It is alleged that the TMC leader kidnapped and tortured the woman and tried to rape. The arrested TMC leader has been identified as Avijit Mandal.

The accused has been sent to 3 days police custody. The incident is of 11 April 2022 (Monday). Assistant Public Prosecution Officer Syed Nazim Habib has confirmed the incident. According to media reports, the victim had gone to her elder sister's house on the day of the incident. She had reached the pond at night to wash utensils, meanwhile TMC leader board allegedly kidnapped her. After this, the family members of the victim gave a complaint about the incident to the police station. The names of 2 accused are mentioned in the complaint. But only one arrest has come to the fore. On Tuesday (April 12) the next day after the incident, the woman was examined at the Medical College in Medinipur. Accused Avijit was produced in the court on 13 April (Wednesday) from where he was sent to 3 days police custody.

On this matter, Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia in Mamta government has said that, 'Rape is a serious crime. No one should politicize this. Appropriate action will be taken in the incident even if the accused belongs to any party. At the same time, BJP leader Tanmay Das has said that, 'We are going to the high court demanding a CBI inquiry. Only the women CMs here do not have sympathy for women. If the court does not intervene, TMC workers will make anyone's life here haram.' The BJP has also raised questions on the silence of CM Mamata Banerjee on this incident. BJP has asked Mamta that, 'Will the Chief Minister say this time also that the girl was pregnant or had a love affair?'

The minor girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party at Hanskhali in Nadia district. The main accused in this case is the son of a Panchayat member of TMC. After this incident came to the fore, CM Mamta Banerjee had raised questions on the claim of gang rape. He had said that, 'How do you know whether she was raped, was she pregnant, or was it a matter of love affair or was she ill.'
