An attempt has been made by the Ministry of Home Affairs to clear the situation on the ongoing issue of NPR i.e. National Population Register, but the ruling Trinamool Congress in Bengal has objections to the mother tongue in NPR and the place and date of birth of parents. Although Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has already said that NPR-NRC-CAA will not be applicable in Bengal.

On December 16, 2019, the Bengal government had issued a notice on behalf of the state secretariat, Navannan, prohibiting all activities related to the preparation and updating of the National Population Register (NPR) in the state. Trinamool says that on the basis of NPR, the Modi government at the Center is clearing the way for NRC ahead.

Mother language information has been added to NPR. Regarding which the Union Home Ministry says that it will be known that how many people use the language in the country. It has also been said that on the basis of this, on the basis of more spoken languages in the states, the respective language will be given status as second or third language. The Trinamool has reservations about this. A Trinamool leader, on the condition of anonymity, said that language has been added as part of a strategy to find out how many people in the country are Bengali-speaking Muslims and then declare them Bangladeshi.
