Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has urged for heightened border security due to the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh. Saha, who has been actively coordinating with Delhi, stressed the need for increased vigilance along the international border to prevent illegal crossings and ensure effective coordination among security forces.

Following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and the resulting political turmoil in Bangladesh, Saha has been in regular contact with Delhi. He held a crucial meeting on Monday with key security officials, including the Chief Secretary, DGP, Assam Rifles, and BSF, to address the current situation. The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of enhanced border security and improved coordination to prevent unauthorized crossings.

Saha assured that Tripura remains stable despite the unrest in Bangladesh. He also addressed concerns regarding the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, noting that local communities have taken measures to protect minority groups.

CDFI Demands Comprehensive Verification of Infiltrators

The Chakma Development Foundation of India (CDFI) has submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Amit Shah, calling for a thorough verification of infiltrators in Tripura and the protection of ethnic Tiprasa people in Bangladesh.

The CDFI's memorandum revealed that from 2021 to April 2024, the BSF detained approximately 1,675 intruders, including 174 Rohingyas, in Tripura. The organization is advocating for rigorous screening of these infiltrators.

The memorandum also emphasizes the need to provide shelter and protection for religious minorities and Tiprasa people who might seek refuge in India amid the current political instability. The BSF’s data indicates that 208 intruders, including three Rohingyas, were apprehended in 2021; 369 intruders, including 59 Rohingyas, in 2022; and 1,018 intruders, including 112 Rohingyas, from January 2023 to April 2024.

The CDFI welcomed the memorandum submitted by Tripura MLA Ranjit Debbarma on August 3rd, and has called for a comprehensive investigation throughout Tripura. Suhas Chakma, founder of the CDFI, pointed out that the majority of Rohingya refugees were apprehended in districts such as Sepahijala, Unakoti, West Tripura, and North Tripura. He stressed that limiting the investigation to specific areas would not reveal the full extent of infiltration.

Chakma also highlighted that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has registered four cases of human trafficking involving Rohingya refugees in cities like Guwahati, Chennai, Bangalore, and Jaipur. The NIA has arrested 21 individuals from Tripura in connection with these cases and has filed charges against several accused.

Chakma further noted that the seizure of lands belonging to indigenous peoples in 28 villages across the South Tripura, Gomati, and Dhalai districts, along with the movement of intruders within and beyond Tripura, underscores the need for a thorough investigation.
