The TRS government's main initiative mission Bhagirath aims to provide safe, adequate, sustainable and treated drinking water to every household in the state, achieving coverage for 208.82 lakh people living in 24,042 rural settlements. The state government is spending Rs 45,000 crore for this program.

A survey on rural drinking water and sanitation found that Nalgonda, Nizamabad, Khammam and Sangam were the top districts with wide coverage due to the size of rural habitations, with Districts where Malkajgiri, Mulugu, Narayanapeta, Warangal (Urban) and Jayashankar Bhupalpalli recorded relatively low coverage.

Mission Bhagirath was launched in the state at an estimated cost of Rs 43,791 crore. The entire project is divided into 26 major divisions, 67 take-up wells, 153 water treatment plants and 1.4 lakh km of pipelines. Through 35,514 overhead reservoirs, taped water connections are being provided to every household across the state. As a testimony to the mission's success, about 11 states have planned to reflect the scheme.
