Washington: The U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Weekend, officially making English the United States' official language. This is the first time in American history that such a decision has been made.

The order states that English has always been the country’s main language, and it is "long past time" to make it official. While most U.S. states already recognize English as their official language, this is the first time it has been declared at the national level.

People applying to become U.S. citizens are already required to pass an English test, showing they can read, write, and speak basic English. Trump's order claims that making English the official language will help new citizens feel more included and connected to American society.

"Speaking English not only helps people find better jobs, but it also allows them to be part of their communities, take part in traditions, and give back to the country," the order states.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 350 languages are spoken in the country, but over three-quarters of Americans speak only English at home.

This decision aligns with Trump’s strict immigration policies, including his attempt to end birthright citizenship, which courts have blocked. Throughout his 2024 campaign, Trump criticized undocumented immigrants who didn’t speak English. During a debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, he said, "They can’t even speak English. They don’t even know what country they are in."

Trump's vice president, JD Vance, has also supported making English the official language. In Congress, he introduced the English Language Unity Act, which aimed to require the federal government to use English in everyday situations. "English has been a key part of American culture for over 250 years," Vance said. "It’s time for Congress to officially recognize that."
