Trump Holds Off on Debate with Harris Until Democrats Pick Nominee

WASHINGTON: Former President Donald Trump has announced that he will not agree to debate Vice President Kamala Harris until the Democratic Party officially names its nominee for the 2024 presidential election. This stance was confirmed by his campaign on Thursday.

According to Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung, “The details of the general election debates cannot be set until the Democrats make their official choice for nominee. Scheduling a debate with Harris now would be premature because the Democrats might still decide on another candidate.”

Earlier in the day, Jason Miller, a senior adviser for the Trump campaign, indicated that a debate with Harris is expected and that multiple debates should take place. However, Miller noted that the Trump team was not yet committed to the debate scheduled for September 10, which is being hosted by ABC News.

The uncertainty surrounding President Biden’s potential withdrawal from the 2024 race and Harris's efforts to secure the Democratic nomination have cast doubt on the debate schedule. While Trump has expressed willingness to debate Harris, he has suggested preferring a different venue, such as Fox News, over ABC News.

Cheung emphasized that the ongoing “political chaos” within the Democratic Party, including speculations that Harris may not be the strongest candidate, makes it inappropriate to finalize debate plans at this stage. He referenced the fact that former President Obama did not endorse Biden until after the Democratic primaries had concluded, implying that the party may still be reconsidering its options.
