Washington: Former President Donald Trump's attempt to prevent the National Archives from giving over his administration's materials to a House panel investigating the January 6 Capitol disturbance was rejected by a federal appeals court in the United States.

The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously rejected the former President's lawyers' arguments that their client could invoke executive privilege to prevent the current administration from sharing the Trump White House's documents with the House Select Committee to Investigate the Attack on Thursday, according to a source.

"The central question in this case is whether, despite the exceptional and urgent circumstances underlying the Committee's request and President (Joe) Biden's decision, a federal court can, at the former President's request, override President Biden's decision not to invoke privilege and prevent his release to Congress of documents in his possession that he deems to be needed for a critical legislative inquiry," wrote Judge Patricia Millett in a 68-page opinion for the court.

"On the record before us, former President Trump has given no basis for this court to overturn President Biden's judgement and the understanding and concessions reached between the Executive and Legislative branches over these materials."
