Trust in News: India ranks higher than US in report on media trust

In a pound achievement, India ranked at 31 when it came to “trust in news” out of the 46 media markets surveyed by the Reuters Institute. The Reuters Institute Digital News Report, 2021, to be released virtually on June 23, finds India ranked 31 out of 46 countries on levels of overall trust in news. Only 38 percent of the respondents from India said they trust news overall.

The survey shows India is one of the strongest mobile-focussed markets, with 73 percent of the respondents using smartphones to access news. Overall, 82 percent of the respondents said they source news online, including on social media, with WhatsApp and YouTube being the top go-to platforms. Concerns of rampant misinformation on these platforms were also high.

While the researchers found trust in news has grown across the world on an average, only 38 percent in India said they trusted news overall. In India, legacy print brands and government broadcasters scored high on trust levels among news consumers. Finland had the highest levels of overall trust in news with 65 percent, while the US had the lowest levels of trust at 29 percent.

Finland had the highest levels of overall trust in news i.e, 65 percent while the U.S. had the lowest levels of trust i.e, 29 percent.
