HYDERABAD: The Telangana Legislature on Tuesday unanimously approved a motion requesting that the new Parliament building be named after Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the man who designed the Indian Constitution.

The resolution put out by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government was approved by both chambers of the state legislature. Minister of business, information technology, local government, and urban planning K. The resolution was moved in the House by T. Rama Rao.

The resolution has the complete backing of both the Congress party and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). There was no BJP lawmaker in the House.

The proposal was approved by a voice vote with no objections, according to Speaker P. Srinivas Reddy.

Passing the resolution, K T Rama Rao (KTR) said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao spoke about the greatness of Bharat Ratna Dr. Ambedkar on Monday.  The minister SAID that Ambedkar gave the nation direction and that there was no better individual to honour than having the new Parliament building bear his name.

Rama Rao claimed that Ambedkar stood for social fairness, the virtues of democracy, and racial harmony. He recalled that Ambedkar was a strong supporter of equality and battled against all forms of discrimination.

The TRS leader claimed that after a 14-year fight, Telangana state was established thanks to the party's and leader KCR's adherence to Ambedkar's ideas. According to him, there would not have been any additional states created if Article 3 of the Indian Constitution didn't exist.
He cited Ambedkar as saying that tyranny of the majority is not acceptable and that if the Constitution is being abused, he will be the first to destroy it. Ambedkar once said that the Constitution is only as good as the people who put it into practise, as Minister KTR recalled.

KTR said, Amedkar described democracy as a system of administration in which radical changes to the economic and social lives of the populace are made without violence.

Ahmed Balala, a member of AIMIM, and Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP), supported the proposal.

Vikramarka had requested CM KCR to approve a resolution in the assembly on Monday during his address to the assembly asking the Center to rename the new Parliament building after Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

KCR had accepted the idea and stated that there was no one better to honour with the name of the new Parliament building.
