The liquid oxygen a lifesaver in times is not available in the hospitals due to its high pricing low procurement or delay in transport or demand and supply indifference. To overcome this situation in Tumkur COVID-19 treating hospital, a private agency has completed a 16 Lakh Oxygen Plant with a capacity of 6,000 liters in one-and-a-half months’ time near the hospital. Now, the Covid-19 treatment hospital finally has its own liquid oxygen plant that will guarantee the supply of the life-saving gas to ICU patients. The hospital has 200 beds and 21 beds in ICU, and the daily requirement of liquid oxygen is  about 1,200 liters.

N S Jayakumar, TMCC Chairman and philanthropist had an oxygen pipeline implemented at the hospital at a cost of Rs 10 lakh. It enables the treatment of over 100 patients with high-flow oxygen therapy. District Surgeon Dr T A Veerabhadraiah said about the ICU expansion to 30 beds in a week following government approval to recruit 10 staff nurses and 10 D-Group employees who will be trained in handling the situation. Over 110 patients have been referred to ICUs in private hospitals due to insufficient bed capacity and are charging prices between Rs 10,000-Rs 30,000 per day, according to the sources.

However, the district surgeon assures of actions against private hospitals that over charge patients. The total need of liquid oxygen in Karnataka is 500 metric tons per day and is buying largely from manufacturers in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Odisha.
