A tusker on the way back to forest after raiding crops died in Bandipur Tiger Reserve (BTR) on Tuesday morning. The patrolling team noticed a jumbo stuck between two rail barricades. The Forest department officials then cut out a portion of the barricade to free the elephant. Officials said the tusker died because of the shock on the spot and then the head hit the nearby rail barricade. Bandipur Tiger Reserve BTR director S R Natesh told the incident happened in Moleyaru range.

Due to the slippery land, the tusker slipped while trying to cross over the rail. It was trying to climb over but he slipped and fell, and died. The gap between the rail barricades are used by the elephants to enter or leave the forest patches to raid crops in the surrounding areas. Another senior forest department official added that the staffers had started surveying the areas along the rail barricades to find risky or vulnerable locations which needed to be checked so that no such untoward incidents repeat.

"Elephants are very smart animals than we think. They come up with simple solutions to cross over no matter what the type of barricades are, the casualties are rare,” the official added. The forest department is involved in erecting rail barricades along the boundaries of forest patches to reduce the number of man- elephant conflict cases. Previously we have seen elephants died while crossing over the rail barricade.
