New Delhi: Twitter has urged the IT ministry to consider at least three months' extension to implement new guidelines to the company after WhatsApp moved court against the Government of India over new IR rules for social media platforms. Police raided Twitter offices in Delhi and Gurugram earlier this week over the alleged Congress toolkit controversy.
Stressing that the company will try to comply with the law applicable in India, the Twitter spokesperson said in a statement, "We are concerned about recent developments in India regarding our employees and the potential threat of freedom of expression to those we serve. The ministry asked social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp to submit immediate status reports on the status of compliance with new digital rules. The new rules came into effect from Wednesday. These companies have not answered questions asked through e-mail about the matter.
WhatsApp has challenged the government's new digital rules in the Delhi High Court. WhatsApp says providing access to code messages will break privacy protection cover. Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that whatever measures India has proposed will not affect the normal functioning of WhatsApp. At the same time, it will not affect the common user.
