Twitter might put usernames up for auction as a way to raise money

America: Twitter CEO and owner Elon Musk is desperate to increase the company's revenue. It appears that the business is willing to try just about anything to get there.

According to The New York Times, the microblogging platform has considered using online username sales as a means to make money. We don't know how Twitter intends to proceed if it decides to do so.

Hackers have been known to list popular usernames for sale. A social media company usually does not decide to sell usernames or even consider doing so.

But this happens only occasionally. Last year, Telegram decided to hold an auction for usernames of both channels and individual accounts. Still, Twitter's strategy reveals its financial difficulties.

According to the report, Twitter engineers have considered auctioning usernames. People will be able to bid on usernames in such auctions.

The concept has been under consideration since December last year. Musk previously said the platform would "soon begin freeing up 1.5 billion accounts." It is uncertain whether the concept will be implemented.

However, not all usernames hold enough intrinsic value to bolster Twitter's finances. But as black market sales and hackers have demonstrated time and time again, distinctive usernames can always command a high price.

Current Twitter policy prohibits the buying and selling of usernames. The Platform Prohibits Username Squatting. Twitter's policy states that attempting to buy, sell or solicit other forms of payment in exchange for a username is also a violation and may result in permanent account suspension. In order for the new idea of the company to materialize, the policy may need to be changed.
