New Delhi: In its recently published monthly compliance report, Twitter has announced the banning of more than 1.1 million Indian accounts for policy violations in the month of May. This figure marks the highest number of account bans in a single month by Twitter in India, surpassing the previous record set in April.
Of the 1,132,228 accounts banned, a significant portion (387) were found to be in violation of Twitter's policy on child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity. Additionally, 1,843 accounts were removed for promoting terrorism, demonstrating Twitter's commitment to combatting harmful content on its platform.
During May, Twitter received a total of 518 user complaints from India, addressing various policy violations. The majority of these reports (387) were related to instances of child sexual exploitation, while 46 were related to impersonation, and 45 concerned hate speech.

These account bans occur at a time when Twitter faces increasing scrutiny from the Indian government, which has been urging the platform to take down accounts spreading misinformation or engaging in hate speech. To enforce its stance, the government implemented new IT rules in May, compelling social media platforms to promptly remove "unlawful" or "hazardous" content within 36 hours of receiving a complaint.
As Twitter navigates these new regulations, its latest compliance report underscores the seriousness with which the company addresses policy violations. The response to the government's rules remains uncertain, but Twitter's commitment to maintaining a safe online space for its Indian users remains steadfast.
