The government has objected to Twitter using ‘manipulated media’ tag for toolkit tweets. The tags are being objected on an alleged Congress toolkit used to target the Centre over its COVID-19 handling.

The government directed Twitter for removal of all the ‘manipulated media’ tag. The matter is yet to get concluded, it still remains pending before law enforcement agency. The central government also specify that the social media platform cannot pass judgment when the issue is under investigation. It clearly stated that the investigation will determine the veracity of the content and not Twitter asking the microblogging platform to not interfere in the investigation process while drawing conclusions of itself.

The Ministry of Electronics and IT wrote “a strong communication” registering objection to the global team of Twitter. The objection over the ‘manipulated media’ tag on tweets made by some political leaders with reference to the toolkit allegedly created to undermine, derail and demean the efforts of the government against the COVID-19 pandemic. The ‘manipulated media’ tagging appeared “pre-judged, prejudiced” and a “deliberate attempt to colour the investigation” by local law enforcement agency and “influence fair investigation process.” While in talks with Twitter spokesperson, he declined to comment on the issue.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra on the alleged toolkit prepared by the Congress to target the Modi government also tweeted about such tagging by Twitter which appears pre-judged, and a deliberate attempt to colour the investigation by local law enforcement agency, the sources said.
