Victoria Police armed crime squad Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said the man forced his way into the Springfield Road property in Blackburn North after 8am while the mother was inside with her five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son.

The offender then bound and gagged the 32-year-old, before taking the two children and fleeing inside the Chinese family’s black 2014 Mercedes Benz C200 sedan with the registration BEQ 882. Security footage then showed him leaving the property about 8.45am – the vehicle was last seen driving east along Springfield Road. After freeing herself, the mother ran outside and alerted passers before police arrived about 8.55am and discovered the two children had been taken.

Both children were still in their pyjamas when they were abducted. Detective Inspector Thomas said police were treating it as an isolated incident and could not yet establish if the offender was known to the family. “These two children would be in great fear and wanting to see their mum and dad and be reunited with them as soon as possible,” he told reporters on Monday afternoon.
