BEIJING : Chaba, the third typhoon of the year, made landfall in the coastal area of Maoming city in China's Guangdong province on Saturday.

The province meteorological bureau said that on Saturday night, Chaba would lash through Maoming and enter the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region while moving northwest at a speed of 15 to 20 km per hour, according to Xinhua report.

The western portion of the Pearl River Delta is likely to suffer heavy rain and thunderstorms during the weekend, while the seas off Guangdong will witness severe gusts of wind up to roughly 160 km/h.

At 7:25 am local time (23:25 GMT on Friday), rescuers in Hong Kong received word of the disaster. They located the ship close to Chaba's centre, where challenging weather and surrounding wind farms made the operation "more difficult and dangerous."

With effect from 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, the provincial government has raised its emergency response level for typhoons to Level-2, the second-highest.
