London: Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was fined by British police on Friday for filming a social media video while riding in the backseat of a car without a seatbelt. This could be an embarrassment for him as he works to turn around the fortunes of his party.

In the north of England, while driving without a seat belt, Sunak, who apologised on Thursday for what he called a "brief error of judgement," recorded a video in the back seat of his car. It is the second punishment Sunak has received from the police since they discovered him and former prime minister Boris Johnson had violated the COVID-19 lockdown rules the previous year.

The fine is a new obstacle for Sunak, whose Conservative Party is currently polling significantly worse than the opposition Labour Party in the run-up to an election scheduled for at least January 2025.

"The prime minister has apologised and fully accepts that this was a mistake. He will, of course, abide by the fixed penalty, according to a statement from Sunak's Downing Street office.

A 42-year-old man from London received a penalty notice, according to police in the county of Lancashire in northern England. Sunak becomes the second prime minister to receive such a fine, following Johnson.
