Ukraine Rejects Pope Francis's Call for Dialogue with Russia:  Ukraine has declined Pope Francis's proposal to negotiate an end to the conflict with Russia, stating that the pontiff's involvement amounts to "virtual mediation." President Volodymyr Zelenskiy dismissed the idea, emphasizing that Kyiv will not surrender.

In a recent statement, Pope Francis suggested that in times of conflict, parties should demonstrate the "courage of the white flag" and engage in dialogue. Although the pope has previously highlighted the importance of talks, this marks the first instance of him using terms like "white flag" or "defeated" concerning the Ukraine war.

While not directly addressing the pope's comments, President Zelenskiy acknowledged the support of religious figures within Ukraine. He emphasized their assistance through prayer, discussions, and actions, contrasting it with distant mediation efforts.

Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed a similar sentiment, asserting that true strength lies in siding with righteousness rather than attempting to equate opposing forces under the guise of negotiations. He reaffirmed Ukraine's allegiance to its national flag and urged the Vatican to support their struggle.

Kuleba also referenced historical concerns regarding Pope Pius XII's actions during World War Two, suggesting that past mistakes should not be repeated. He called for solidarity with Ukraine in its fight for survival, alluding to the atrocities of the Holocaust and the need for decisive action.

Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, head of Ukraine's Eastern Rite Catholic Church, echoed Zelenskiy's defiance, emphasizing Ukraine's resilience and refusal to surrender.

President Zelenskiy has consistently called for the withdrawal of Russian troops and the restoration of Ukraine's territorial integrity. However, the Kremlin has rejected these terms, hindering progress towards resolution.

This is not the first time Pope Francis has sparked controversy with his remarks on the conflict. European officials supporting Ukraine have criticized the pope's stance, urging him to encourage Russia to withdraw its forces instead.

In the face of adversity, Ukrainian officials and religious leaders remain steadfast in their determination to resist evil and protect their sovereignty.
