KIEV: Ukraine has to implement 107 regulations and directives under the Association Agreement with the European Union (EU), according to Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration.
The majority of the legislative acts required for Ukraine's greater integration with the EU have been submitted to parliament for consideration, as per Stefanishyna, as quoted by the government press office on Thursday.
The implementation of the norms and directives will assist Ukraine in bringing its laws closer to those of the EU and open the ground for the start of talks on future EU accession, she noted.
The Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU comes into force on September 1, 2017, allowing Kiev and Brussels to collaborate in sectors such as commerce, defence, taxation, border control, and counter-terrorism, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Ukraine was accepted as a candidate for EU membership on June 23 by EU leaders.
An association agreement is a bilateral agreement between the European Union and a third country. In the context of accession to the European Union, it serves as the basis for the implementation of the accession process. Turkey currently has an association agreement. Association agreements between the Western Balkan countries and the European Union and its Member States are called 'stabilisation and association agreements'.
