Russia: Russian strategy in the ongoing Ukrainian crisis is aimed at preventing Ukraine from joining NATO. In reality, the war clouds have grown thicker as a result of the American and British positions and rhetoric.

The ongoing nerve war and escalating tensions between the US and Russia over Ukraine have entered their fourth month, but the conflict dates all the way back to 2013 or even 2008, when Ukraine applied for NATO membership.

Ukraine was historically a part of the Soviet Union until 1991 and is now a country sandwiched between Russia and Europe. After 1991, even its polity appeared to be under Moscow's influence, and its foreign policy has veered between being pro-Russian and pro-European Union over the years.

However, the current crisis stems from a rather vital source of energy, namely natural gas, which neither the Russians nor the Americans have mentioned explicitly in their discussions or stated as a cause of the conflict.

The crisis's origins When we attempt to decode the crisis, we discover that it is fundamentally about energy and its impact on regional and global geopolitics. It is a fact that, despite numerous global initiatives and campaigns to replace fossil fuels, we still lack a viable source of sustainable technology capable of providing low-cost, reliable power on a global scale. Natural gas, the least polluting fossil fuel, has become increasingly important as a viable energy source in this scenario.
