WASHINGTON – White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced that President Joe Biden has "in principle" agreed to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Psaki's confirmation of a possible Biden-Putin summit late Sunday night followed a statement from France's Elysee Palace stating that the two Presidents have "accepted in principle" a virtual meeting brokered by French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke separately with Biden and Putin on Sunday.
According to the Press Secretary, the summit would take place following a meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov later this week, assuming Moscow "does not take military action."
"We are always prepared to engage in diplomacy. We are also prepared to impose swift and severe consequences if Russia chooses war instead. And Russia appears to be continuing preparations for an imminent full-scale assault on Ukraine "In a statement, Psaki stated The latest development comes as the Biden administration estimates Russia has amassed up to 190,000 troops in and around Ukraine, including separatist forces in eastern Ukraine's conflict-torn Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
