MANCHESTER: The UK's opposition Labour Party, currently leading in polls ahead of the July 4 election, has pledged to recognize a Palestinian state as part of its election manifesto released on Thursday.

According to the manifesto, which outlines the policies Labour would enact if it forms the next government, "Palestinian statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people."

"We are committed to recognizing a Palestinian state as a contribution to a renewed peace process which results in a two-state solution with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state," the manifesto reads.

The current Conservative-led government has previously expressed that Britain could formally recognize a Palestinian state before the end of a peace process. They have emphasized that Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip must be provided "the political perspective of a credible route to a Palestinian state and a new future."

In May, Spain, Ireland, and Norway officially recognized a Palestinian state, a move that drew criticism from Israel. Israel, which has faced increasing isolation following over seven months of conflict in Gaza, has strongly reacted to these recognitions.

Labour's pledge comes amid increasing international pressure to resolve the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict and achieve a two-state solution. The party's stance underscores its commitment to supporting Palestinian aspirations for statehood and promoting peace and stability in the region.

The election manifesto also includes various other policies aimed at addressing domestic issues and international affairs.

Labour's promise to recognize a Palestinian state could significantly influence the UK's foreign policy stance if the party secures victory in the upcoming election.
