UNITED NATIONS: According to a UN spokesman, Turkey's request to change its name to Turkiye has been granted.
According to media reports, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that the change took effect immediately after the international organisation received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu requesting that the country's name be changed. According to reports, Cavusoglu stated that the change in spelling was made as part of a plan to boost the country's worldwide standing.

On Tuesday, the Foreign Minister declared that the letter had been officially submitted to the United Nations and other international organisations.

"We were successful in laying a decent foundation for this with the help of our Directorate of Communications. We've made it feasible for the United Nations and other international organisations, as well as countries, to see the switch to 'Turkiye,' "Anadolu Agency quoted Cavusoglu as saying.

With a decree signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in December 2021, the initiative to use the country's foreign name, "Turkiye," on national and international forums began.
