UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations urged Israel to permit human rights and humanitarian organisations to carry on their work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). On Thursday, Israeli forces broke into, searched and sealed the offices of 7 Palestinian human rights and humanitarian organisations in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, media reports read. Their property was seized and destroyed and military orders about closing the offices were left at the premises.
The proposed closures "impact all institutions working to promote human rights and development and are offering help," according to UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Palestine Lynn Hastings.
As per UN News, the UN and its allies take charges of funding terrorism as well as Israel's designation of these organisations as illegal and/or terrorist organisations seriously.
Israeli authorities have not provided any persuasive proof to UN agencies or NGO partners working in the OPT to substantiate these designations, despite offers to investigate the allegations and verify whether monies have been misappropriated. Recently, a number of member states declared that the information provided to them did not support the designations.
The UN agencies and the Association of International Development Agencies released a statement saying that Israel's attempts to close these organisations' offices "represent the latest in a series of actions that are further restricting the ability of human rights, humanitarian, and development work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which affects all institutions working to promote human rights, development, and providing assistance."
