UNITED NATIONS: Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, has reaffirmed his demand for an end to violence in India originating from religious disputes.
On Tuesday, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Guterres "is for full respect of religion, for advocating against any form of hate speech or incitement, and, of course, a halt to any kind of violence, including violence based on imagined religious differences and hatred." At his daily briefing, he was responding to a journalist's query about "the heightened tension" in India following two former BJP officials' controversial statements regarding the Muslim Prophet Mohammed.
The party's leadership has suspended BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma, and the party's Delhi unit media head Naveen Jindal has been dismissed.
Several cities' police departments have filed charges against Sharma for "hurting religious sentiments."
