UNITED NATIONS: In the face of threats to multilateralism, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for greater international cooperation.

"United Nation member states have committed themselves to the values of multilateralism and diplomacy for peace by ratifying or accepting the UN Charter," Guterres said in his message for the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, which is observed on April 24 every year.

The multilateral system and the value of diplomacy, on the other hand, are "under assault from all angles," said the UN General Secretary, citing issues "ranging from the climate crisis to the escalation of hostilities."

"We need to turn this crisis into an opportunity for multilateralism. On the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, I urge all governments and leaders to reaffirm their commitment to dialogue and global solutions as the only way to long-term peace "said UN Secretary-General Guterres.

The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was established by a UN resolution on December 12, 2018, and was honoured for the first time on April 24, 2019.
