Sudan: The United Nations has said in a report that an additional half a million people, or 9.4 million people, in South Sudan will need humanitarian assistance and security services in the coming year.

According to the 2023 South Sudan Humanitarian Needs Overview report, more people will experience food insecurity in 2023. Nearly a third of South Sudan's population of 12.4 million currently faces severe food insecurity.

According to the report, human conditions are further worsened by endemic violence, conflicts, access restrictions, operational interventions, public health issues, and climate change impacts such as floods and droughts.

Countries that have experienced conflict in Western Equatoria and the Upper Nile states will be in greatest need of assistance.

The needy population in South Sudan is increasing every year, but fewer resources are available to meet their needs, according to a statement by Sarah Besolo Nyanti, the country's humanitarian coordinator.

Nyanti urged the government to promote development and create peaceful conditions to reduce the need for humanitarian aid.

A peace deal signed in 2018 by former rivals President Salva Kiir and deputy Riek Machar is under threat due to ongoing violence in the country.

Recently, Machar has accused Kiir of breaking the peace agreement.
