Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has urgently called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This appeal comes as the death toll among Palestinians has tragically surpassed 40,000, according to the latest figures from Gaza health officials.

In a statement released on August 15, 2024, Turk described the situation as a "grim milestone," following reports that the conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, has led to 40,005 deaths and 92,401 injuries in Gaza.

Turk highlighted the severe impact on civilians, particularly women and children, underscoring the tragic loss of life among non-combatants.

He expressed deep concern over ongoing violations of conflict rules by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), which have led to extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including homes, hospitals, schools, and places of worship in Gaza. The scale of destruction, according to Turk, is "deeply shocking," with approximately 130 casualties reported daily over the past ten months.

The UN rights chief has called for all parties to immediately agree to a ceasefire and to cease hostilities. He also emphasized the urgent need for the release of hostages and the freedom of Palestinians who have been detained without justification.

Turk reiterated the importance of ending Israel's occupation and stressed the need for implementing a two-state solution, which has broad international support. He pointed out that the current situation is largely due to repeated failures by the IDF to adhere to the rules of war.

"International humanitarian law (IHL) clearly prioritizes the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure," Turk said. "Our Office has documented serious IHL violations by both the Israeli military and Palestinian armed groups, including Hamas."

He urged the global community to reflect on its inability to prevent this crisis and to push for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and the end of arbitrary detentions. Turk concluded by calling for the realization of the internationally agreed two-state solution to bring lasting peace.
