BEIRUT: UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers were targeted during a regular patrol in the country's southern village of Ramyah, according to the National News Agency.
On early Tuesday, one UNIFIL soldier was wounded when the peacekeepers' trucks were intercepted and two of them were damaged, according to Andrea Tenenti, a UNIFIL spokesperson. According to the reports, he stated that the Lebanese Armed Forces on the scene were able to calm the situation.
"The peacekeepers were not on private property, but on a public road exercising their duties of enforcing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and ensuring order in southern Lebanon," Tenenti said. UNIFIL has complete freedom of movement within its area of operations, according to Resolution 1701.
"Attacks on men and women who serve the cause of peace are crimes under Lebanese and international law," the spokesperson added, urging the Lebanese authorities to investigate and prosecute the perpetrators.
