Nicosia: In a concerning development, Turkish Cypriot forces assaulted United Nations (UN) peacekeepers stationed in Cyprus on Friday, as reported by the UN.

The incident transpired within the buffer zone that demarcates the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot segments of the island. Turkish Cypriot soldiers reportedly fired warning shots and hurled stones at the peacekeeping personnel.

Fortunately, no injuries were sustained by the peacekeepers. Nonetheless, the UN swiftly denounced the attack.

"This represents a grave breach of the status quo and contravenes the UNFICYP mandate," emphasized Elizabeth Spehar, spokesperson for UNFICYP. She went on to urge the Turkish Cypriot faction to promptly take measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

The UNFICYP, a long-standing peacekeeping force, has maintained a presence in Cyprus since 1964. Its mission centers on preserving the existing state of affairs and thwarting the resurgence of violence.

Cyprus has remained partitioned since 1974, when Turkey intervened in response to a coup led by Greek Cypriot nationalists. The Turkish Cypriots subsequently declared their autonomy in the north, a recognition confined solely to Turkey.

For decades, the UN has diligently pursued efforts to reunify Cyprus; however, negotiations have remained entrenched in an impasse.

This assault on UN peacekeepers marks a disheartening setback to the peace process, further underscoring the tenuous situation on the island.
