New Delhi:- Global food prices rose for the first time in three months, with trade disruptions from India to the Black Sea and extreme weather once again raising concerns about supply.

According to a report on Friday, the United Nations food price index rose 1.3% in July, led by vegetable oils. This marks a recovery from a two-year low reached last month when new threats emerged in the supply chain.

Last month, Russia withdrew from the Black Sea Grain Agreement that allows millions of tons of Ukrainian food to be shipped abroad. In addition, major rice exporter India has banned some shipments of the staple and extreme weather conditions are hampering harvests in places like China and Southern Europe.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' rice index reached its highest nominal level since 2011, following restraint in India. This, the FAO said, "raises food security concerns for a large segment of the world's population, especially the poorest and those who spend most of their income on food purchases.”

While the index remains well below last year's record high, the rise poses a new risk to food inflation, which remains elevated globally. Prices are still soaring in Egypt, though gains have begun to slow or decline in countries like Kenya and Brazil.

Vegetable oil prices rose 12% on the month. The FAO said the increase was driven by trade uncertainties in the Black Sea, along with concerns about the North American harvest and weak palm oil production prospects.
