SEOUL: After a nearly three-year pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the US-led United Nations Command (UNC) restarted its educational programme about the roles of its rear facilities in Japan on Wednesday, officials said.

The resumption came as South Korea and the US sought to strengthen security coordination in the face of North Korea's escalating nuclear and missile threats, with both highlighting the significance of trilateral cooperation with Japan in dealing with the recalcitrant dictatorship.

According to sources, an undefined number of South Korean military officers attended the three-day UNC Rear Orientation, during which they will tour different UNC Rear bases in Japan.  General Paul LaCamera, the commander of the UNC, US Forces Korea, and the South Korea-US Combined Forces Command, was also present to brief the South Korean commanders on the UNC Rear's tasks.

On Facebook, the UNC wrote, "He highlighted the necessity of coalition and logistical support in the defence of the Republic of Korea." "During the briefing, General LaCamera referenced Winston Churchill, who said, "There is only one thing worse than fighting with allies, and that is fighting without them," as per reports.

Yokota Air Base and Yokosuka Naval Base, all near Tokyo, and Kadena Air Base and Futenma Marine Corps Air Station, both on Okinawa, are among the UNC Rear's seven bases in Japan.  Those bases are intended to provide logistical and other types of assistance in the event of a crisis on the Korean Peninsula.
